Three Types of People: Chickens, Ducks, and Swans

Swan on a black lakeMy friend and spiritual director, Reverend Lawrence Goshorn, recently reminded me that there are three types of people in this world: chickens, ducks, and swans. We need to remember the difference. Yes, God loves us all the same. Yes, we are all of equal value in the eyes of our Creator. However, in terms of reaching and experiencing our maximum potential on this earth, we need to remember the difference between chickens, ducks, and swans.

Chickens gravitate towards the lower bases. Enough said. Ducks quack much to attract attention. Look at me. Me, me, me. Mine, mine, mine. In contrast, swans gravitate towards the higher levels and the cleaner waters. Also, they are quiet, majestic, and distinguished. Swans are beautiful, and beautiful things don’t ask for attention. They receive attention but do not ask for it.

We all need to embrace our true royal identity: majestic, distinguished, and truly beautiful swans.
