The truth is, no matter how busy our lives appear to be, staying active and eating well must remain a top priority.

The foundation for vibrant health is not complicated but rather simple. It rests on a handful of daily disciplines:

Sleep 6-8 hours per night.

Exercise at least 45 minutes per day.

Eat less quantity but better quality.

Drink plenty of water.

Focus your mind on noble, uplifting, and pure thoughts.

Always remember: nothing tastes as good as being fit feels. Nutrition – what, how much, and when we eat – is paramount. A consistent exercise routine coupled with adequate rest completes the “health and fitness” equation.

Strategy is the art and science of winning. The word “strategy” comes from the Greek “strategos” which describes the military strategist or general on the battle field. Strategy means outsmarting the competition.

Strategy is the science and art of the fluid troop leader. Dwight D. Eisenhower once said that “[i]n preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless but planning is indispensable.”

“Strategy is about attaining and maintaining a position of advantage over adversaries through the successive exploitation of known or emergent possibilities rather than committing to any specific fixed plan designed at the outset.” (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategy)

Henry Mintzberg refers to strategy as “a pattern in a stream of decisions” to contrast with a view of strategy as rigid, static plans. Max McKeown argues that “strategy is about shaping the future” and is the human attempt to get to “desirable ends with available means.”

If I were to summarize and define “strategy” in one sentence, I would say that “strategy” is the stewardship of “means” (people, resources, functions, capacities, skills, opportunities, capital, time) towards accomplishment of “ends” (goals, desired outcomes, visions, purposes).

Strategy deals with macro level thinking. It pertains to finding and employing necessary and available means towards reaching desired ends. How do you effectively and efficiently get from point A to point B?

We all have a lot to be thankful for. In the busyness of life, it’s easy to take for granted the many and priceless things most of us enjoy. Shelter, family, education, nutritious food and clean water can sometimes be taken for granted.

It’s the beginning of the year, a time of self-reflection and improvement. Maybe you want to learn a new skill, start on that book from your lengthy “reading list,” eat healthier, or plan your next vacation. Whatever your goal is, you’re determined to follow through and enjoy a fresh start of the New Year.

The status quo is not good enough; normal will never do. You’re seeking to improve yourself and your surroundings. Like you, millions of people across the world are setting goals and have done so throughout generations and centuries.

A Brief History

At the beginning of the year, the ancient Romans made promises and gave gifts to their god Janus, the god of beginnings, from which the word “January” derives. Similarly, the Babylonians made promises to pay their debts and return borrowed items.

Making New Year’s resolutions took many forms but endured throughout the ages and across various cultures. It ultimately found its way into the modern world, including the U.S., where it has been growing in popularity within the last few decades.

Today 45 percent of Americans start New Year’s resolutions; however, a mere 8 percent ever finish them. As an example, the top ten most commonly broken resolutions, according to TIME, are the following:

1. Lose Weight and Get Fit

2. Quit Smoking

3. Learn Something New

4. Eat Healthier and Diet

5. Get Out of Debt and Save Money

6. Spend More Time with Family

7. Travel to New Places

8. Be Less Stressed

9. Volunteer

10. Drink Less

New Year’s resolutions, while easy to make, are also easy to break. Only the few, the 8 percent, persevere. So, below are a few tips that will help you reach your goals this new year.

The Fewer, the Better

It’s tempting to make several resolutions. It seems as though you’d have a better chance of keeping one if many were made. But this is not so. According to Social Psychologist Roy Baumeister, every time you focus on any one of your resolutions, it makes it easier to neglect the others.

Making too many resolutions undermines your success and drains your willpower. So, this year make two or three resolutions. You’ll have a greater chance at keeping them.

Keep It Easy

That’s right. Easy. The purpose of making a New Year’s resolution is not to change your life overnight, or even over the course of 365 days. The purpose is to recognize the necessity of progress and experience personal development.

Therefore, before you commit to run a marathon, consider taking smaller steps first. Perhaps, pledge to jog three times each week. A simple, manageable goal is easier to honor.

Tell a Friend

Before it’s too late, share your New Year’s resolutions with a friend, family member, or colleague. It’s helpful to have a supporting voice hold you accountable.

Celebrate the Milestones

The road to improvement isn’t always easy. It’s an ongoing process filled at times with challenges. It’s critical to reinforce the milestones and celebrate the small victories along the way. It will make goal-setting a more enjoyable process.

I wish you the wisdom to select your New Year’s resolutions well and the perseverance to keep them! May you form good habits and experience success and enjoyment throughout the new year!

I’ve included the first few paragraphs here. There’s a link at the bottom so you can read the rest of the story:
When I think about the people who have shaped my character, I immediately think of my late grandfather, Constantin Marinescu from whom I learned the powerful virtues of “patience” and “perseverance.” My grandfather waited for 50 years for the Americans to come to Romania. A young man during World War II, my grandfather prayed with millions of Romanians that the Americans would come and bring freedom and democracy in Romania. His dreams and hopes were dashed when Roosevelt and Churchill conceded Eastern Europe to Stalin as a result of the Yalta Conference at the beginning of 1944.

Instead of the Americans, the Russians came and brought with them Communism. For five decades, my grandfather continued to pray and hope that the Americans would someday come. My grandfather persevered against much hardship. Much of his land and property were confiscated. My grandfather waited patiently year after year, decade after decade.

Finally, in 1989, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, communism collapsed in Eastern Europe. The winds of change swept the country of Romania and brought with them the first American missionaries. Some of them had the chance to meet my grandfather who welcomed them with tears of joy and gratitude. Fifty years later, my grandfather’s perseverant and patient prayers were finally answered. The Americans did come. Constantin Marinescu’s dreams came true.

Here I am 20 years later, living in America, practicing the virtues that I learned from my grandfather. You might ask, what is the difference between “patience” and “perseverance?”

Williams Shakespeare once penned this inspired verse: “expectation is the root of all heartache.”

The more I experience life, the more I understand the truth behind the Bard of Avon’s words. I am learning to expect less and less of people and more and more of God. As a matter of fact, when it comes to people, I replace expectation with preference. I prefer this and that as opposed to expecting this or that.

My sagacious friend in West Texas, Homer, has been applying this discursive strategy in his interactions with, and sense making of, people for decades. He perpetually has a smile on his face. When most would take offense or be disappointed by a failed “expectation,” Homer chuckles, brushes things off, and caries on with peace in his heart.

The cure to all heartache: expect everything from/of God and nothing from/of people. There will be no more disappointment. God will always meet and exceed all expectations. And, hopefully more often than not, people will serendipitously surprise when preferences are satisfied. This way, people will never disappoint for there is nothing expected from or of them. If a preference is not met, we can chuckle and smile with peace in our hearts.

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him.” (Psalm 62:5)

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” (Psalm 20:7)

“Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God.
He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
He remains faithful forever.” (Psalm 146:3-6)
